Coronavirus - COVID19 Testing at TCRHCC

What are we testing for:  COVID19 = Novel Coronavirus= SARS CoV2

This is a NEW virus that is highly contagious.  It is thought to be spread by tiny droplets from infected people- usually when they cough or sneeze, but sometimes when they breathe, laugh, or talk. They can spray these droplets in an area up to 6 feet from their face. This is why we encourage people to wears masks and stay 6 feet away to stop the spread of droplets.

The Infection Can Cause a Variety of Symptoms

Common: Cough, fever, shortness of breath, chills, body aches, new loss of taste or smell, headache, tiredness. Less common: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, sore throat.

Most patients who get symptoms will feel ill 3-5 days after being exposed to a person who has the infection. Many patients who have COVID have no symptoms; this is especially true for children and young adults. However, even if there are no symptoms, you can still spread the virus to other people.

THE DAY OF THE TEST

The tests we do at TCRHCC test for viral particles in your nose. If the test is positive, this means you have been infected with COVID19 virus. The test result is a snapshot of your status the day the sample was collected, so even if it is negative, it may become positive in the days after the test, depending on your exposure to people with COVID.

IF YOU WERE EXPOSED

IF YOU WERE EXPOSED to someone with COVID 19, we recommend you get tested 3-5 days after your exposure, or sooner if you have developed symptoms.

The test is less accurate if the swab is done immediately after exposure- it can be a “false negative” test because it was too early to find the virus in your nose even though you may be infected.

IF YOU ARE POSITIVE

The tests are very accurate when they are positive- this means that COVID 19 was found in the nose.
People who test positive must self-isolate.

For patients who have symptoms, they must isolate for the 10-3-3- rule:

  • 10 days since onset of symptoms, and
  • 3 days of no fever without medicines, and
  • 3 days of improving symptoms.

For patients who do not have symptoms and never develop symptoms, they must isolate for 10 days from the date of the test. Our results calling staff will call you to explain this further if you have a positive test.

These tests can remain positive in some patients for WEEKS after they have recovered from the illness and even when they are not contagious any more.  This is why we do NOT advise that patients get retested after a COVID19 infection.

You cannot get COVID19 from the test process.  Swabs are sterile and are not opened until they are placed in your nose.  Staff conducting the swabbing are using personal protective equipment and sanitizing between patients to keep everyone safe.

IF YOU ARE NEGATIVE

If you are negative this means that we did not detect the virus in your nose on the day of your test.

However, if you have symptoms consistent with COVID19 infection, or have been exposed to someone with COVID or symptoms of COVID at home or at work - YOU SHOULD STILL QUARANTINE for at least 14 days to protect others. You may need to quarantine longer if the person infected lives in your house.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO WHILE WAITING FOR TEST RESULTS

If you are concerned you have been exposed or have symptoms, you should QUARANTINE at home, use a mask even at home or in a vehicle with other persons, decontaminate the surfaces in your home, and practice social distancing. This is how you will stop the spread of COVID19 to your friends, family and coworkers.

TCRHCC staff will call you with the results once we receive them. REMEMBER that it can take up to a week to get the results back.

PLEASE if you get a call from 928-283-2501 it is likely one of our results calling team trying to notify you of your results.

PLEASE ANSWER, listen to your voice mail, or call back!  Your call may be referred to our hot line or community health staff. Our results calling team and contact tracing team have lots of information to share with you.

THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN OUR TESTING PROCESS

The only way we can stop COVID19 is to

  1. Diagnose it early and
  2. Get infected people to ISOLATE at home- and their families to QUARANTINE since they have been exposed.

PLEASE avoid large gatherings (especially funerals, weddings, church meetings, ceremonies), wash your hands, disinfect your homes, stay 6 feet apart from other people and WEAR YOUR MASK!

Call 1-866-976-5941 if you have more questions. We will be in touch with your results once we get them.
